Tesla Model X: Media Control Unit - Touch Screen (Remove and Replace)
Backup
- Connect a laptop with Toolbox to the vehicle.
- In the Toolbox "MCU Cloner" panel, select MCU Backup.
Note: If the backup fails, continue to the next
step. The MCU can be restored from the Instrument Cluster in
the "Installation" section of this procedure instead.
- In the Toolbox "MCU Cloner" panel, select MCU Disable.
Removal
- Remove the MCU/touch screen (refer to procedure).
- Remove the touch screen surround trim (refer to procedure).
Installation
Installation procedure is the reverse of removal, except for the
following:
Transfer the screen protector from the new touchscreen to the old
one.
Restore
- In the Toolbox MCU Cloner panel, run the MCU Restore program.
Note: If the MCU backup failed in the "Removal"
section of this procedure, select MCU Restore from IC to
restore the MCU files.
- Update the vehicle firmware.
- If the MCU backup failed in the "Removal" section of this
procedure, open the Toolbox "Reset Remote Unlock Security Key" panel
and press the Start button.

Remove the MCU/touch screen (refer to procedure).
Working from the top of the MCU/touch screen, carefully use a
plastic trim tool to press the SD card retaining tab away from

Remove the front door trim panel (refer to procedure).
Disconnect the harness connector from the top of the speaker.
Release the bolts (x4

Remove the rear fascia assembly
(refer to procedure).
Disconnect the parking distance sensor
connector.
Carefully release the parking distance sensor
from the tabs that secure it to the bracket on the fascia.
Removal
Remove the welcome plate (refer to procedure).
Remove the screw that secures the rear sill trim panel to the
body (torque 2.5 Nm).
Remove the rear sill trim panel from the vehicle.
