Tesla Model X: Front Gearbox Fluid (Remove and Replace)

Special tool(s) required for this procedure:

1072053-00-A 8 mm hex x 1/4" hex bit adapter
1072058-00-A 13 mm x 1/4" hex bit adapter
Drain & Refill
  1. Remove the HEPA filter housing (refer to procedure).
  2. Remove the front skid plate (refer to procedure).
  3. Release the acoustic cover from the front drive unit to gain access to the drain plug. Caution: Take care not to damage component(s).
  4. Prepare a drain container and a small piece of cardboard or other flexible material to funnel drained fluid into the drain container. Note: Ensure that the drain container is able to hold at least 2 liters of fluid.
  5. Use a 13 mm ratcheting wrench and the 2 hex bit adapters to remove the drain plug. Note: Prevent the fluid from draining onto the chiller.

     Drain & Refill

  6. Clean and reinstall the drain plug (torque 28 Nm).
  7. Reinstall the following components:
    • Acoustic cover
    • Front skid plate
    • Front aero shield
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Remove the fill plug.

     Drain & Refill

  10. Fill the drive unit with the correct amount of proper fluid:
    • Use the fluid specified in General Information > Fluids and Capacities > Fluids.
    • Use the amount specified in General Information > Fluids and Capacities > Fluid Capacities.
    Caution: Use exactly the specified amount of transmission fluid. Do not fill to the top of the filler opening.
  11. Clean and reinstall the fill plug (torque 28 Nm).
  12. Reinstall the components that were removed for access.
